Horticulture Waste Management
The Rashtrapati Bhavan has taken an initiative of managing its waste responsibly. Under this initiative, 3RM partnered with Rashtrapati Bhavan and started deploying activities laying the foundation of conversion of Rashtrapati Bhavan into Ecosmart Campus.
Mrs. Omita Pual, secretary of then President inaugurated phase 1 of Ecosmart Campus drive at Dalikhana where garden waste is being converted into compost and biofuel.
Problem
Rashtrapati Bhavan is a 320 acre Estate that additionally includes huge presidential gardens (Mughal Gardens), large open spaces, residences of bodyguards and staff, stables, other offices and utilities within its perimeter walls. In terms of area, it is one of the largest residences of a head of state in the world. Its like a mini city inside and produces wastes like any other community in general which includes food, horticulture, dung etc. This creates huge nuisance and needed to be addressed in a scientific manner.
Solution
It produces huge quantity of organic waste like horticulture, garden, food and kitchen waste, horse and cow dung from various entities located inside the estate. A project of converting it into Ecosmart Campus was envisaged in consultation with 3RM. The first phase where the garden & horticulture waste was planned to be addressed. 3RM has deployed GreenRE™ (H), an advanced GWR™ ( Garden Waste Reprocessor) which is semi automatic in operations and converts the waste into biofuel and compost. The compost is used inside the campus for the huge green landscape and the biofuel can be taken away for smokeless stoves or as RDF in future projects as planned.
